Why New Yorkers Wear So Much Black?

In NYC, black is always the “new” black. It’s the color that blends the most into the subway, the sidewalk, and the buildings at night. It also mixes and merges all the different ethnicities and cultures together. The color itself represents power and community.

During colonial times, clothing garments with darker colors were imported from England until around the 18th Century. When New York and other colonies were developing their clothing industries, the cost of trade and regulations made acquiring dye very challenging. However, in early days of the colony, darker colored fabric was much more functional, standing up against the dirt and grime that came along with unpaved streets, sharing quarters with livestock, manual labor jobs, and the construction of the city itself.

In fashion today, black continues to be the classic color of versatility and elegance.Black is the color that most people wear around the city; if you wear something else, you either stand out or feel out of place.

I walked around four different locations in NYC to celebrate the resilience and beauty of the color black around the city. I used two foundation black garments: black A-line skirt and a tank top. I added on other clothing items and accessories to make it look different:

Times Square

Time Square is referred as “The Center of the Universe,” and is always crowded with locals, people who work there, and tourists from around the world. A few times, I’ve taken tourists there and guided them just to see the expressions on their faces when they see it for the first time. “The lights will inspire you.”

Bryant Park

This is a public park in midtown Manhattan. It is a small park measuring less than ten acres -- you can walk around in one visit. I really like how they change the areas and activities throughout the seasons. It’s an ideal place to sit and relax after long walks around the city.

NYC Public Library

The New York Public Library was developed in the 19th Century, and is currently the second largest public library in the United States. Its style is Beaux-Arts-style. It has an asymmetrical facade on the 5th Avenue entrance. It was constructed with Vermont white marble and it has Corinthian columns with two lions at the entrance and many other ornaments and statues.

Every time I see it I remember the wedding venue of the movie Sex and the City. I like the building itself and the views it has of 5th Avenue.

Oculus

¿Por qué Los Neoyorquinos Usan Tanto Negro?

En la Ciudad de Nueva York, el color negro siempre es el “nuevo” negro. Es el color que mejor se mezcla en el metro, aceras y edificios por la noche. También combina y fusiona diferentes etnias y culturas al mismo tiempo. El color en sí representa poder y comunidad.

Durante la época colonial, las vestimentas de colores oscuros fueron importadas desde Inglaterra alrededor del Siglo 18. Cuando Nueva York y otras colonias desarrollaban su industria del vestir, el costo del comercio y las regulaciones hizo la adquisición de tinte muy difícil. Sin embargo, en las épocas tempranas de la colonización, las telas de color oscuros fueron mucho más funcionales y prácticas debido a la suciedad derivada de las calles sin pavimentar, de compartir cuartos con el ganado, de los trabajos manuales, y de la construcción y desarrollo de la propia ciudad.

Actualmente, en la moda, el negro continúa siendo el color clásico de la versatilidad y la elegancia. Negro es el color que la mayoría de gente utiliza en la ciudad; si utilizas otro atuendo, o destacas o contrastas fuera de lugar.

Caminé por cuatro diferentes locaciones de la Ciudad de Nueva York para celebrar la belleza, resistencia y adaptación del color negro en la ciudad. I utilicé dos atuendos negros fundacionales – una falda de corte A y una camiseta sin mangas – y sumé otros artículos de vestir y accesorios para siempre lucir una apariencia diferente:

Times Square

Times Square es referido con “El Centro del Universo” y siempre está saturado de tiendas, personas que trabajan, turistas alrededor del mundo. Algunas veces, incluso me he acercado a algunos turistas y los he guiado solo para ver las expresiones de sus rostros cuando ven el lugar por primera vez.

Bryant Park

Este es un parque público en el centro de la ciudad de Manhattan. Es un parque pequeño de menos de 10 acres – puedes pasear y dar una vuelta por el en solo una visita. Me gusta mucho el cambio de áreas y actividades con el pasar de las estaciones del año. Es un lugar ideal para sentarse y relajarse luego de largas caminatas alrededor de la ciudad.

Biblioteca Pública de la Ciudad de Nueva York

La Biblioteca Pública de la Ciudad de Nueva York, fue construida en el Siglo 19, y es actualmente, la segunda biblioteca más grande de los Estados Unidos. Su estilo es Beaux-Arts. Tiene una fachada asimétrica en la entrada de la Quinta Avenida. Fue construida con mármol blanco Vermont y cuenta con columnas Corintias con dos leones en la entrada, así como otros ornamentos y estaturas.

Cada vez que la veo, recuerdo el lugar de la boda de la película Sex and the City. Me gusta el edificio en sí y las vistas panorámicas que ofrece de la Quinta Avenida.
