My first thought was to walk towards the curtained wall so I could see the view of the city, but then I noticed loud noises that I thought were coming from the other visitors in the gallery exhibition. The sounds, however, were coming from speakers inside the open gallery space. Curious, I turned to read about the project being exhibited. I was struck by the powerful juxtaposition the artist had created in this equally powerful and unique space.
I was at the Whitney Museum of American art on the 5th floor, which had been set up as a completely open gallery, with no obstruction, to amplify the sounds from the Andrea Fraser’s audio project and highlight the spectacular views of New York City.
It is the largest column-free museum exhibition space in New York, measuring 18,200 square feet. The space faces the Hudson River to the west, and the city to the east. Fraser, the first featured artist in the five-part exhibition, installed recordings she had taken at a prison for her project, Down the River. Though the sound bites were varied, depending on whether the prison had bars or solid doors, the space inside the building allowed the recordings to blend together with sounds of gallery visitors to become one. Fraser’s work expressed the cold, empty and dehumanizing feel of correctional facilities, in direct contrast to the open, awe-inspiring feeling of the museum.
Fraser said the following about her work: “Museums increasingly are warehouses of wealth, capturing surplus in the form of artworks that are no longer financially productive. Prisons are institutions that warehouse surplus labour and populations that have been economically excluded from the labour market.”

Mi primer pensamiento fue el de caminar hacia las ventanas, para tener una vista de la ciudad, pero luego me percaté de los fuertes sonidos que en primera instancia, pensé que venían de los otros visitantes en la galería de exhibición. El sonido, sin embargo, provenía de parlantes situados dentro del espacio abierto de la galería. Curioso, voltee la mirada para leer acerca del proyecto en exhibición. Me impactó la poderosa yuxtaposición que la artista había creado de manera impactante y singularmente equitativa en ese espacio.
Fue en el Museo de Arte Americano, quinto piso, el cual ha sido acondicionado por completo como una galería abierta, sin obstrucciones, para amplificar los sonidos del proyecto de audio de Andrea Fraser y resaltar las espectaculares vistas de la Ciudad de Nueva York.
Es el museo con un espacio de exhibición libre de columnas más grande de la ciudad de Nueva York, con un área de 18,200 pies cuadrados. El espacio tiene al Río Hudson al oeste y la ciudad, al este. Fraser, la primera artista invitada en la exhibición que consta de 5 partes; instaló grabaciones captadas en la prisión, que fueron parte de su proyecto, Río abajo (Down the River). Aunque los extractos de sonido eran variados, dependiendo de si la prisión tenía barrotes o puertas sólidas, el espacio dentro del edificio, permitía que las grabaciones se mezclaran con los sonidos de los visitantes, y que ambas se fusionaran, convirtiéndose en uno solo. Fraser dijo lo siguiente acerca de su trabajo: “Los Museos son cada vez más, almacenes de riqueza, capturando un exceso de formas de arte que no son más financieramente productivas. Las Prisiones, son instituciones que almacenan exceso de mano de obra y población que ha sido económicamente excluida del mercado laboral.”
Es bastante interesante cómo el museo ha creado nuevas visiones de la Ciudad de Nueva York con sus innovadoras terrazas y espacios abiertos.
