Why are Retail Stores Closing in NYC?

Walking around the city I have noticed and witnessed the closing of many retail stores, this is known as the “retail apocalypse”. Some of these stores formed part of the city’s architecture and culture.

Retailers are expected to close more than 2,200 in stores in the USA this year, following record-high rates of closings last year according to Business Insider.

The most recent store that closed and filed for bankruptcy was Barny’s New York in Madison Ave. I had the opportunity to go the day before it closed, and it looked so empty and sad. Only a few items left and the stores racks, hangers, storage, displays and equipment. The employees looked downcast and customers were trying to get a grasp of what was left.

In Port Authority there were two retail stores, Strawberry and Bulton’s that many commuters and tourists stopped to get fashion items for many years closed a few months ago. It was a surprise to believe that the “clearance” signs were to close the stores permanently.

The closing of Forever 21 in the Westfield Mall at World Trade Center was another surprise. The store filed for bankruptcy and it was one of the locations that was selected to be closed. With less than three years operating it sold everything before closing its doors. At the end they were selling the racks, mirrors, displays and shelves.

Other stores closing are Modell’s and Kmart in the Herald Square shopping district location.

Some of the main reasons why stores are closing:

Rent increasing: The change of lease and the increase of rent in many of these buildings obligates them to close.
Fast Fashion: The fast production and low quality of garments are making the consumers not buy. A lot of people are now aware of the effects of fast fashion and are quitting buying in those stores and creating movements.
Online shopping: Many people shop online and refuse to go to the stores to waste time and energy browsing.
Over-expansion of malls: They have so many spaces available and the rent is expensive, and many people only buy when there is a sale or the holidays.
Other ways of getting fashion for less: Renting garments online like “Rent The Runway” and thrifting are in and many people are considering it.

Stores might need to reinvent themselves and be in strategic locations. Maybe a new customer experience and more sustainable fashion. It’s time for a shift in the retail business.

Make sure you know your style, personal color palette and body type. That way you are not just married to a store but find what you will use and wear in different stores.

Don’t let the closing of your favorite stores affect you, remember to choose well, experiment with different looks and use what you already own.

Sobreexpansión de centros comerciales: Tienen tantos espacios disponibles y el alquiler es caro, y muchas personas sólo compran cuando hay ofertas.
Otras formas de conseguir moda por menos: Alquilar prendas en línea como "Rent The Runway" y compras de ropa usadas están en voga.

Es posible que las tiendas necesiten reinventarlas a sí mismas y estar en ubicaciones estratégicas. Tal vez una nueva experiencia de cliente y una moda más sostenible.
